TTM Tuesday!

Hey guys, Drew back here! First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who commented on my previous post advising my recent college decision. Regardless, I am planning on coming home next semester, and I want to say that its more than just that I'm homesick. Being lonely has played into my decision quite a bit, however I also feel uncomfortable on my campus and since it's a big sports school, a majority of the students have a really scummy attitude. I've made one friend on campus, and he and I agree that we're misfits at this school, and after a few of my old friends came to visit a few weeks ago, I realized I couldn't defend why I came to this school in the first place, so I decided that coming home would be the right decision for me. It's one of the first real life decisions I've had to make, but I feel relieved having made a decision and am looking forward to returning home and commuting to a great local private school while getting to see some old friends, my girlfriend, and my family.

Anyway, personal life aside, I've gotten four TTM successes since my most recent autograph post, and here are the first three of them! Enjoy:

Adam Kennedy: 2/2 in 22 Days (Received September 9th)

Adam Kennedy was a staple of my childhood watching baseball. He was always around, and I never knew much about him, but prior to sending off a few of my cards of his, I looked up his lifetime stats and saw that he actually was a fairly solid player. In 2009, he led a career resurgence in which he batted .289 with the A's, swatting 11 home runs, driving in 61 runs, and stealing 20 bases. Mr. Kennedy is now retired, and signed a 2008 Allen & Ginter as well as a 2010 Topps card for my collection; both of which look fantastic signed boldly in blue.

Austin Meadows: 1/1 in 127 Days (Received September 15th)

Last year, I sent 2013 Pirates #1 draft pick Austin Meadows this same card, only to get a response from his mother, which you can see here. Luckily, I retried Meadows earlier this season and got him back this past month, signed beautifully in blue. I've heard great things about him thus far into his minor league career and I really hope to see him succeed for the Bucs down the road!

David Murphy: 2/2 in 35 Days (Received September 25th)

David Murphy has had his moments so far into his 9 year career. He has been known as an average player often times, but he did offer a lot to Rangers fans; maybe to a little bit lesser extent than Nick Swisher gave the Yankees in his time. Now, they both play together in Cleveland, and neither of them had very good years in 2014. However, Murphy has shown that he could turn it around, and I'll definitely be rooting for him after he signed my 2009 Topps and 2012 Gypsy Queen cards in black with bible verses! I remember reading Night Owl Cards' posts about how much he liked that Murphy card, so when I saw it I knew I should try to have him sign it. Sure enough, he came through!

Thank you so much to these three players for signing my stuff, and again to my Dad for opening everything for me while I've been gone! But, I'll be home soon!

See Ya!

The Wait is Over- Partial Topps Comeback

Hey guys, Drew back here. I got a very random, but nice surprise in my mailbox the other day. Out of the blue, Topps sent me one of the three redemptions they've owed me! Take a look:

Out of 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen, a sweet Eric Hosmer on card autograph! I pulled this card as a redemption back during the Summer of 2012 at a card show, and although Eric was having a down year, I was excited to receive the card. A little over a year later, it arrived, and while my excitement generally wore off by the time it came, I still really like the way it came out. Hosmer had a much better season in 2013, batting .302 with 17 home runs and 79 RBI for the surprise Royals team! Kansas City is out of the playoff race, but they experienced their best season in a while and Hosmer was one of the major reasons why.

I will consider trading this if you have a solid offer for me, but if not I plan on holding on to it for a little while! Thanks Topps for finally cashing in on this one! See Ya!

A Very McCutchen Mailweek!

Hey guys, Drew back here! As you can see from the title, I recently decided that I'm going to PC Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have been my second favorite team for a few years now, and Andrew is certainly a good reason why. He's already an MVP contender at the age of 26, and is a great role model on and off the field. It was a no brainer to add him to my list of favorite players!

In order to conserve a little money, in exchange for McCutchen, I've decided to un-PC Nick Swisher. I still love the guy, but chances are he won't be a Yankee anymore, so I thought it'd be wise to close that collection while he's still in New York. I'll still take his cards off your hands, but I won't be buying up on him as big as I used to.

I already owned one McCutchen autograph prior to the beginning of this collection- out of 2010 Bowman Platinum, but I recently picked up a few more things to jumpstart the chase. Check out the first official McCutch Mailday!

We begin with a bang! Out of 2010 Topps Triple Threads, the Rising Stars triple relic autograph numbered to 99 is now mine! This one wasn't exactly dirt cheap, but I really wanted to get something sweet to base this whole collection around. It's a real clean, slick card, and it shines quite a bit as well.

Next, out of 2012 Topps Heritage, a Clubhouse Collection relic! I'm not too big on relics, although I still am one card shy of completing the Topps Tier One relic set. When you start a collection of a player, however, relics are almost a necessity, and this will also push me towards the almighty trifecta.

Lastly, for now, is this beautiful framed relic out of 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen! McCutch has two relics in the Gypsy Queen set, one framed, and one not framed, and I believe this is the nicer of the two. I'm not too crazy about the color of the border, but it certainly wasn't bad enough for me to pass it up at only 2 bucks shipped.

So, that'll do it for now! If anyone has some McCutchen cards for trade, leave a comment below! Thanks, and See Ya!

2012 ECN Recap! (Pt.3) Gypsy Queen Break!

Hey everyone, Drew back here! At last weekend's show, Dad and I needed an alternate plan for pictures, because I accidentally left home without my camera. We ended up stopping at a grocery store along the way to pick up a disposable Fujifilm camera to use for meeting players. My mom just got the pictures done and is at work for now, so we're going to skip that until tomorrow, and continue on with our recap.
2012 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Hobby Box - Click Image to Close
It has certainly been a while, but Dad, rather than buying singles for me at the show, decided to buy a box of 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen for us to open together! As I've mentioned, Gypsy Queen is definitely my favorite product of the year, due to several factors that I'll explain as I go through the recap. Every box contains the standard 24 packs, with 10 cards per pack, one being a mini card. Rather than having a box topper, every box contains a little 10 card exclusive mini pack featuring assorted minis you wouldn't find in the regular packs. To go along with all of this, there are 2 relics and 2 autographs per box on average. So, without further delay, let me proceed to reveal what we pulled out of our box!
We'll start with what came out of the mini pack, which we actually pulled 11 cards in. I was wondering why all of the cards didn't fit into the holder, and then I realized we were given one more than the average pack! All of the players were fairly big names; the biggest probably being Roy Halladay, Mark Teixeira, and Ryan Braun. We also pulled mini inserts of some, ya know, solid names- Josh Hamilton, Derek Jeter, and Dustin Pedroia. Not too bad!
The base cards feature a very elegant, yet intense design. The photos of the players are edited to have more of an artsy look, and I think they came out fantastic for the most part! Since I really enjoy a nice autographed card, I always look at how well the cards would come out signed, and well, a lot of these would look beyond awesome with an autograph across them!
Like I said when I opened a couple loose packs of GQ at the show, I absolutely love the variety as well. Many older players got themselves a card in the checklist, guys who are much more deserving of a card of this caliber than some lower level rookies Topps may have included a few years ago. I honestly can't see myself getting rid of any of these cards, they're just too nice!
Unfortunately, Topps had to throw in one of their relentless gimmicks to knock the set down a level, by including short printed cards featuring different photos than the regular base card has. I pulled six from what I could tell: Sabathia, Boggs, Weaver, DiMaggio, Strasburg, and Granderson; all being players I like. I also realized that the difference in the two DiMaggio cards is that the base card is zoomed in on him a little more. That's it.
As stated earlier, every pack also comes with a mini, to go along with the box topper pack. I think Topps could've done better with this product if they didn't include the minis in the packs, and just had them as box toppers. They would be more limited, therefore increasing its value. All of these minis above are just the regular minis, but don't worry, Topps didn't forget to make things more complicated to set collectors.
What did I tell you. To go along with the exclusive box topper pack and the regular minis, Topps also threw in 4 red "Gypsy back" minis as well as 4 "Straight Cut" minis. Each are one in six packs, and while we pulled some solid names, I really don't see why these subsets are all that necessary. People may say Topps is trying to preserve the nostalgia; well, if they really wanted to do that, all the cards would be minis. Beautiful cards, yes, but with a lack of importance, they knock the set down a bit.
Sorry everyone, but I'm not done with minis. We now have: the exclusive box topper pack, regular minis, Gypsy back minis, Straight Cut minis, black minis, AND green minis of every player in the set. And we wonder why this hobby has been dying down of late. One big chase for collectors is for all of a certain player or team's cards, but with the amount of cards of each of them out there today; those collectors will go broke on JUST the base and inserts. Topps, please, take notes, I'm preaching to a choir over here.
Our final mini was this sepia toned mini of Aramis Ramirez, numbered 94 of 99. I like Ramirez, and this is kind of a cool idea, however, wouldn't they be so much cooler as rare throw ins in the exclusive mini pack? Personally, while the pack on top was cool, if they featured some semi-rare things like these, I would have enjoyed opening it a little more.
Now, we go on to the concept subsets: Sliding Stars; Moonshots; and Glove Stories. I have a feeling the sliding stars idea wasn't really an idea, just Topps employees having fun with the program they use to edit the cards and making a fairly pointless set of it. I mean, these won't sell for much more than the base, considering I pulled 8 of them in my box. Again, great looking cards, but seriously, is this needed?
I think all of you know what I'll say here, and on the next insert, so I'll just show you what I pulled between Moonshots and Glove Stories.
Okay cool, now onto the good stuff! We pulled two of the blue framed parallels, Ian Kennedy and Josh Hamilton; both numbered out of 599! Hamilton is one of my favorite players, so I was so pumped to pull his insert out of a pack. I think Topps did a really good job with these parallels, because you only get a few a box, and they remain relatively rare. I think after years and years of parallel experience, Topps should have a good idea of how to get their cards to sell or not. This is one way that works. Oh, and by the way, these are the nicest looking cards we pulled in the box.
Finally, our 4 hits. First and foremost, we pulled this gray relic of Tim Hudson. Normally, I'd complain, as a swatch of Tim Hudson isn't a whole lot to write home about. However, the card looks sweet, and if I were a Braves fan, I'd be picking this up in a heartbeat. It is for trade, since I don't really have a use for it, but it wasn't too bad of a pull.
Also for trade is our second and final relic of the box, this framed one of Yovani Gallardo. I like the variety in the relics; how you get one framed and one basic relic per box.  Gallardo isn't a terrible pull either, and the relic has a cool feel to it, however I don't have much of a need for it either.
We didn't do too poorly in the autograph department either, the first being of Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland. Any chance you get to pull a Ranger is a good chance, since it's almost a given that they'll still be around come October. It'd be cool to have pulled this and then watch Mitch come through in a clutch spot this fall. As for the card itself, well, besides for the sticky note yellow card back; it's awesome. Moreland has a solid autograph compared to most others, and the white fade look really makes the auto stick out well.
The final autograph pull was a pretty nice one, being of Reds ace Johnny Cueto! I've always liked Cueto, as I mentioned a few weeks ago when I picked up an auto of his from the new Tier One set. He doesn't have as nice of an auto as Moreland- in fact, he only signs his first name, but it is an upgrade from when he was a rookie back in 2008. For now, I think I'm going to hang onto both, as he's currently looking like a major Cy Young candidate. However, if you make an offer I can't resist, I'll consider!

Overall, I'm a big fan of Gypsy Queen, no matter how many gimmicks try to knock it off its throne. I think the minis can be blended into one more universal set, with the sepia parallels coming one per box as a mini. The insert subsets I can live with, but they don't really seem to fit with the set idea very well. I'll give it an A- as a final grade, only because the minis tend to be a tad bit confusing to understand. Then again, after years of dealing with it in Allen & Ginter, most collectors are used to Topps' weird ways.

Thanks Dad for getting me the box again; I really enjoyed opening it up with you! Part 4, dedicated to all 6 players I met, coming right up!

See Ya!

2012 East Coast National Recap! (Pt.1)

Hey guys, Drew back here! All summer, there are certain events I pinpoint as being the highlights of my summer. Sunday was one of those very days, as Dad and I geared up to make the trip over to White Plains, NY, for the East Coast National! As most of you know, we're common customers to JP's Sports autograph signings and card shows, and with a pretty solid lineup, we couldn't miss out on it. I met 6 players, which will be shown later this week, and bought a couple of nice cards, but for today, you guys will see the results of the few packs I opened at the show (hint: I didn't do too badly!). Here we go!

2012 Topps Archives (1 Pack):

- Nyjer Morgan
- David Ortiz
- Josh Hamilton
- Jon Lester Gold Parallel
- Andy Van Slyke
- Starlin Castro
- Jose Valverde
- Clay Buchholz

If I didn't get the Hamilton card I wouldn't have been very happy at all with this pack. Every card besides it is for trade.

2011 Bowman Chrome (1 Pack):

- Chase Utley
- Dillon Gee RC
- Michael Blanke
- Dickie Joe Thon

I'm not quite sure why I bought a $7 pack that only held 4 cards in it. I was feeling good, so I thought maybe a sweet auto would be coming, but well, the results of this pack gave me a pretty solid reality check.

2011 Allen & Ginter (1 Pack):

- Brandon Belt RC
- Daniel Descalso RC
- Peter Bourjos
- Tim Lincecum
- Miguel Tejada
- CJ Wilson
- Jonathan Sanchez Black Bordered Mini
- Roy Halladay Hometown Heroes

I wasn't paying attention when looking for these packs, and instead of grabbing a pack of the new Ginter, I got some of the old, boring, last year Ginter. I believe I have the set, so these are for trade too.

2012 Topps Gypsy Queen (2 Packs):

- Casey Kotchman
- Ryan Dempster
- Heath Bell
- Jhoulys Chacin
- Jimmy Rollins
- Ryan Braun
- Troy Tulowitzki
- Roy Halladay

- Willie Mays
- Bob Gibson
- Ty Cobb
- Geovany Soto
- Scott Rolen
- Trevor Cahill
- Jemile Weeks
- Angel Pagan

- Carlos Ruiz Gypsy Back Mini
- Willie Mays Moonshots Insert
- Matt Garza Mini

I love the look of this year's Gypsy Queen, and by far these were my favorites of the packs. The mix of older and newer players makes for a really strong checklist, and it's fun pulling cards of people I actually know (unlike Dickie Joe Thon)! But, I did say earlier that I did pretty well overall, and well, one card in the Gypsy Queen pack just about made up for the cost of the packs....

I saw blue when I opened the pack, and I suddenly thought it could be Griffey or Koufax or Darvish or just something beyond incredible. It wasn't at THAT high of a level, but I'll take a Gypsy Queen Eric Hosmer on card auto any day! Hosmer is having a sophomore slump type season, but I think he's got enough potential to be a star for the next decade or so! I redeemed this when I got home, and unfortunately, the Estimated Shipping date was around the beginning of December. A long wait, but I believe it will be well worth it.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of the recap! See Ya!

Two Young Gun Autographs!

Hey guys, Drew back here! The past few days haven't exactly been busy for me, however rather than blogging I've been preparing for a card show I'm going to tomorrow! Finally, all the wantlists are ready to go and I'm looking forward to going with my buddy Schuyler early tomorrow morning! So, in the meantime, check out the two autographs I've recently picked up off of eBay within the past month or so!

First, out of 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen, here's a pretty sweet looking Daniel Hudson on card auto! Hudson has been one of the better young pitchers in the game over the past few years, although this year hasn't really gone as well so far. I've had him on my fantasy team a few times in the past year, and he's been able to provide me with some solid starts. This year's Gypsy Queen autos, along with most Topps 2012 autos in general, look fantastic, and I'm glad I was finally able to get my hands on one. For the price I paid, it was well worth buying, without question.

While the Hudson autograph was pretty awesome already, I went out and outdid it by picking up this 2009 Upper Deck Signature Stars rookie autograph of Pirates emerging star James McDonald! James is enjoying a breakout season that has had people arguing whether it was worthy of an All Star selection or not. I picked up McDonald about a month and a half ago and he has been nothing less than brilliant, and on the season he sports a 9-3 record with a 2.37 ERA for the first place Pittsburgh Pirates! The Pirates have become my second favorite team in all of baseball since I've started following them for a few months, and I'm glad to say that I now own an autograph of arguably their ace! While this card doesn't have the sex appeal the Hudson has, it certainly isn't the ugliest design I've seen. It's a sticker autograph, but sometimes you have to buy what's fairly cheap and affordable.

Anyways, I hope to see a few more people join in on the contest before the July 21st deadline! Click here if you haven't seen it yet but want to win some great prizes for next to nothing! But for now, so long and See Ya later!

Multiple Package Recap, All from William!

Hey guys, Drew back here for the summer! First of all, how is everyone doing? I'll have you know I'm doing better than ever, and it feels awfully darn good to be back here with you all. I've got a heck of a lot of stuff to show off that I got since my departure from the site, a lot of it coming from my great friend William, from foul bunt! Since the last time I posted about cards from him, he's sent me not one, not two, but three packages that kept me updated with all the new products coming out, as well as some other assorted Yankees from over the years! Check out this pretty solid portion of what he's sent over the past month or so:

We'll start with some of these mixed Yankees, including an awesome Bowman rookie card of Yankee prospect Adam Warren, who's one of the more underrated guys in the system, as well as a rookie of now Mariner Hector Noesi. Noesi was pretty good for us last year, but was dealt in the Jesus Montero-Michael Pineda deal earlier this year. Also I really like the Jorge Posada vs. Pedro Martinez "Grudge Match" insert. I miss when the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry was intense and really fun to watch.

It really is getting more and more difficult to fill holes in my Yankees wantlist, however William knows best, with all of these cards being new additions to the Yankee box! The Pettitte Turkey Red refractor numbered to 999 is now one of my favorite Pettitte's I own; the shine really pops in person. Also, that Munson Diamond Kings insert is pretty as well.

One of the packages contained quite a few 2002 and 2005 Topps cards, which was cool also. While I do own the 2005 Topps set, I have hardly any of the 2002 set, so most of these were also needed!

Getting a little more modern, here are a few more recent cards (besides the Abbott and O'Neill's in the top left)! I love the way the Topps parallels shine from the past couple years, so it's definitely awesome to be able to add the Bartolo Colon card! Also, I don't think enough people give Bowman Platinum the props they deserve, because the Cano base card is one of the nicest base designs I've seen in a while.

Like I said, if it wasn't for William, I would have close to 0 2012 cards. He's been basically my provider of all 2012 cards necessary, not because I tell him to, but because he wants to, which is really too cool. Here are 7 Heritage cards, one being one of those little sticker things of Mark Teixeira. I'm surprised on how nice Heritage actually looks this year; I honestly thought it would be a really lame set.

Another set that surprised me this year was Bowman, which sports a really clean, sharp look this go around! Normally Bowman has a very generic, bland feel, especially in the regular base set, but this year there's something refreshing, although I can't quite put my finger on what it is. I'm excited to add my first card of Jose Campos, the "PTBNL" in the Pineda/Montero trade. Apparently he's supposed to have pretty good stuff as well, and is ranked in the lower half of most Yankees top 10 prospects lists.

No set in 2012 has been nicer than Gypsy Queen though. Topps definitely nailed the hammer on the head with this set! It is so elegant and pays a lot of respect towards the art of the game, which is something that needs to be remembered more often. Baseball is the classiest sport around, at least in my opinion, and some of these photos just show the elegance of the game better than just about anything I've seen in cards the past 5 years or so. Well done Topps.

The final current set William hooked me up with is the most recent (besides Tier One) release, Series 2! He sent me a ton of Yankees base from the set, which again was really awesome of him. I'm still not really sure where I stand with this year's set, because I feel like the swoosh thing in the corner kind of gets in the way of the photo a bit too much. However, Topps' design team has really stepped their game up this year and proved why they received the license from the MLB rather than Upper Deck. I do miss the rivalry though, a lot.

I hate to be a downer, but while the base designs have been pretty nice all around in 2012, the inserts in the flagship sets have been a bit disappointing. We've seen pretty much the same inserts the past 3 or 4 years now, and even though they have different designs, the concept has been exactly the same. I say every year keep 2 or 3 solid inserts, like the parallels for example, and do away with the rest. Believe it or not, in the long run inserts of young players like the Betances card above can kill a lot of value for player's rookie cards. I recently read an article in Beckett Magazine about how Mariano Rivera's Bowman rookie card is so valuable because it's his only rookie, meanwhile Bryce Harper rookies will be pretty affordable one day because he has so many. While I don't always agree with Beckett, they are 100% right in this case.

For the final two cards, we switch gears a little bit (emphasize the little)! This John Lennon Topps card came out of their 2011 American Pie product, which was really cool! William told me the card was from his wife Mal, so again I want to thank her for this awesome one! I've always loved the Beatles, and have a tremendous amount of respect for John Lennon.

The final card (for now) was one he bought specifically for me, from 1961 Post of Yankee great Elston Howard! William, you are too much my friend! I'm going to have a field day trying to find a way to get you back for all of this awesomeness!

Everyone PLEASE go follow foul bunt and check out that site, because man is William an awesome guy. I'm so glad to call him my friend. Thank you man.

See Ya!
